Day 7 of Taste-Mas: Het Anker Cuvée van de Keizer Blauw 750 ml

Every year on the 24th of February, we celebrate the birth of Charles Quint. Therefore we brew a special beer in limited edition called Cuvée of the Emperor. This exceptional beer is a special version of the Golden Carolus Classic, with an enriched taste pallet and mysterious aromas added. The caramelised malts and its 11% Alc. Vol. give the Cuvée of the Emperor the warm roundness of wine together with the refreshing taste of beer. It is imperially crowned with a special cork so it can be preserved for a long period of time with a constant cellar temperature of 12° C. An imperial beer to cherish and enjoy in moderation. 750 ml, 11% alc./vol.

“I can’t believe I am drinking a strong beer!” Is what nobody ever is going to say after their first sip of this one. At 11% alcohol, each sip is like two and a half sips of a typical beer. Aside from the powerful alcohol taste, there is also a strong sweet molasses taste to this beer. Hunker down boys, it’s goong to be a bit of work to get through 750 mL of this.

On the plus side, the champagne cork opened with a satisfying pop.

Whoever this Charles Quint guy is – he liked his beer boozy. It isn’t as crazy as I thought it would be – but it is strong for sure.

I honestly can’t place the taste in this brew. It is akin to a good beer with a shot of great vodka in it. Not harsh, not hoppy, just a nice tasting beer with a lot of alcohol taste and feel.

Day 7 and this is the booziest beer yet. Like Russ said a nice satisfying pop of the cork. The beer pours well that is very dark and leaves a creamy, foamy, caramel coloured head that stays quite a while. You can smell the alcohol as soon as it’s uncorked, so don’t drink this one on the bus. The carbonation seems a little flat when opened for 10 minutes or so. Easy to drink for the most part because of the smooth taste and little to no harsh after taste. 750 ml of this beer is just enough for me until next Taste-Mas.

Redemption! Last night seemed to be a glorified bust yet tonight was awesome. Every swig was a surprise! Sometimes buttery toffee, sometimes strong coffee. I was never sure what was next. I loved it! I will look for this one next time I “hit the store”. And yes 11% was worrisome but it was well executed. Sweet!

Another 750ml bottle here, sensing a theme here.
Perhaps i was pouring incorrectly on this night but there was a lot of foam/head. Was thinking this may be medium to high in carbonation. This one seems a bit darker than the previous nights, a darkish brown.
There is a very unique smell to this beer – dont smell the malt as much here but something unique.
Interesting taste. Sweet. Perhaps the sweetest beer tasted over the past week. Medium bodied and really low to medium carbonation – much less than originally expected.
I think Russ is right here – sweet molasses.
Not sure i love it as much as Steve but i like the character of this one.

Very strong and very smooth. It seemed a bit sweet, but I didn’t mind that. That may have been the thing that smoothed it. Strange, because sweet wine makes me shudder.
