Farm Table Series are sessionable beers inspired by tradition and brewed true to a classic style. 80 Shilling is dry, toasty Scottish-style ale. This malt-focused sessionable ale is a deep-copper-colour, with mild-to-moderate caramel flavour and balanced hop presence.
Originating in the 1800s, Scottish ales were classified on a “shilling” scale based on their alcohol strength, typically ranging from 60 shilling (“light”) to 90 (“wee heavy”). In the midst of these extremes are 80 shilling ales (“export”), classic crowd-pleasers and a style that has stood the test of time.
Pours a deep copper colour. Malt character is predominant, with a few esters, and just enough hops for balance. Toasted flavour, and dry, with mild-to-moderate caramel. 600 ml, 4.7% alc./vol.
Ach – a wee Scottish ale!
I love Beau’s. That’s no secret. This is an earthy ale that is easy to drink.
The description above accurately reflects how I feel about this brew. I am not a huge hoppy beer fan, but the tinge of hops on the back end of this beer is just enough!
Did I mention how easy to drink this beer is? By the time I have finished this post; I’ve also finished the bottle.
This is step down in flavour and harshness from the Amsterdam Wee Scottish ale we had last year and thank goodness for that. I’ve had some other Scottish Ales that have been undrinkable, but this is great. I suppose it has something to do with the Shilling scale and this is a mid range shilling scale ale. Smooth, great tasting caramel and I’m glad I picked up a few.
I’m not a huge fan of this one. Very toasty. A bit more bitter than I would like.
